Stenopogon coracinus?
nick upton
Lots of these 15mm Asilids hunting from maquis vegetation in Greek Peloponnese near Nafplio in August. Two different male images posted. They seem a good match to Stenopogon coracinus based on images I can find but I don't know if there are similar species in the region.

With Engel (1930) it keys out to coracinus and the description fits rather nicely, so, I think you are right.

Many thanks Reinoud, I really appreciate your expert feedback on this. There was a really thriving population of these in extremely hot weather in the coastal strip near Nafplio - around 40C every day for a week. Too hot for me! N
