Haematopota sp.
Robert Heemskerk
hi flyforum,

This beautiful but also irritating bloodsucking fly was collected in Belgium (~Bouillon)
It is a Haematopota sp. I think.., but which one?

this specimen got some dust, these are no hairs.

Whoah!

Looks like scutellata, that would be the second (?) record for Belgium.
So please let's see a picture of femur 2 ?
And can you remove - very gently !- those scales from the thorax and scutellum and make a dorsal pic again ?

Hi Theo,

Here is a picture where you can see some of the femur.
I'll take a picture with less dust on thorax soon.

Great. It looks very promising.
HOwever, femur 2 (the second femur) is still invisible.

I can see the tibia ('scheen'Wink, but not the femur ('dij'Wink

COuld you give it another try ?

Hi Theo,

I took another detail of the fly which show (2nd) femur better.
If you wanna, I can show the femur from other directions..

Thanks, the second femur is indeed slightly pinkish, as it should be.

Therefore, within reasonable doubts this is H. scutellata.
If I'm not mistaking, second record for Belgium.

Congratulations !!

As you see: always pay attention to aberrant Haematopota !
