Hello fly community, today I post these lousy images of a fly, and I want to apologize for the quality - but I really would like to know what it was since I found the behavior so interesting. It was about the size of a Calliphora but flying more like a Syrphid or a Bombylius - hovering on a spot for a short time, then continuing flight very straight, without the zig-zagging of other flies, but more slowly than a Syrphid, somehow 'relaxed'. It was flying on a sunlit path in a forest at the Danube near Vienna. Always near to the ground, as if searching for something. The head frons is quite conspicuous, the abdomen was appearing shiny black when flying. It looked quite characteristic to me, so hopes are high that someone here can ID it. That's awesome. Thanks a lot! Maybe it was Gonia picea, but genus is totally fine for me |
