Pipizella viduata? = yes
johnes81
male - 6.3mm - Berlin - May 2018

I am hoping that someone can confirm at least the genus Pipizella.

I don't have keys for many Syrphidae. I also request any tips of where to find keys.

I usually just glance at photos and try to memorize appearance/morphology. I thought it was Cheilosia until i looked at it a bit closer. I quickly browsed the gallery and this looks very similar to Pipizella viduata.
https://diptera.i...to_id=4312

I can match genitalia if someone can provide drawings. I see that nine Pipizella are recorded for Germany, four of which are recorded for Berlin (according to the Entomologische Gesellschaft Berlin).

I have read about Speight but i cannot find pdf files. Anyone able to help? I would like keys to genera, keys to Cheilosia especially.

Thank you for your time,
John

Hello Friends, I am sorry about requesting keys for Pipizella. I just found a pdf with drawings of genitalia:

Revision of the West-Palaearctic species of Pipizella
Jeroen van Steenis and Jan A.W. Lucas

I didn't see this before. I guess that i overlooked it in the search results.

So I just need a confirmation of the genus please.

Thank you.

Today i've dissected the specimen and i can confirm P. viduata. I'm surprised that i was able to id it by photo because most text implies that genitalia is required. Very interesting.

Bravo! Helge for recognizing this specimen. I've never seen a Pipizella before, so i wasn't sure about my tentative id.

Anyway, the genitalia is a perfect match to drawings.

Thank you for your time,
John
