Eristalis similis?
blowave
Hi, I hope these pics are good enough, my only real reason for thinking this is Eristalis similis is the very strong pterostigma on the wings.

Any suggestions welcomed! Grin

Location: Lincoln UK

Habitat: Garden location on Dahlia species, sandy soil.

Date: 22nd September 2007.

Thanks!

Unfortunately... the front tarsi are yellow, therefore its E. pertinax.

Thank you John! That is one thing I di pick up recently, the feet colour, but I did not know if E. similis also had the same coloured feet. Frown

Nope, black. And E. pertinax is the only other species that can have such an elongated pterostigma, besides E. similis.

Thanks again, it is good to know these things! I now wish I had printed out the Eristalis key when it was online. Wink

I believe Mark van Veen's key should be online still, though I have no idea where...

Hmmm, I thought perhaps it was taken off because he was launching a new book. I have searched, looked on Google Scholar too, no luck! I don't know if I could justify buying a book, but I guess we can't really expect these things for free.

blowave: I've got a copy of that key, but don't think I should put it online, as I didn't write it!
I've sent you a 'private message' via this site about emailing it to you.
