Peleteria ... note the 2 strong bristles on the face, between the eyes and the vibrissae Smile

how can we know the possible species? What are the characters I must seek for?

I have never seen them here in the UK so I am not the best to ask, but Theo might know. I have had a look in the Central European key and it keys to Peleteria varia (to which it bears a striking similarity in general appearance too!) but there is always a caveat that you are outside the range of the key and you might/probably have other species to consider Smile

Hi Chris

Could you please post the bibliographic reference of the Central Europe key that you mention? Thanks

Miquel

Hi Miquel

It is:

Tschorsnig, H.P. and B. Herting. 1994. Die Raupenfliegen (Diptera: Tachinidae) Mitteleuropas: Bestimmungstabellen und Angaben zur Verbreitung und ?kologie der einzelnen Arten. Stuttgarter Beitrage zur Naturkunde. Serie A (Biologie) 506, 170 pp.

But I can do better than that - here is a link to a page on my site where you can download the English translation & figures: http://tachinidae...nloads.php The file is passworded but the password is just "password"

Let me know how you get on with it Smile

Interesting, but I get "The archive is either in unknown format or damaged" on both zip files Sad

OK, I'll try at home later tonight first. The download seemed fine, but the files didn't open ...

Can you please upload your second image to the gallery? Or to the new overviews forum maybe - then people can add suitable Nowickia, etc, as they come in. Your photo shows the Peletaria facial bristles really clearly.
