Hermetia illucens.. what happens here?
jorgemotalmeida
Hi

I spotted this female Hermetia illucens indoors. And I realized that in extremity in abdomen there is something that could be a larva? or more probably a genitalia... it extends a lot if it is really a ovipositor!

Take a look:

It is the ovipositor, all right.

A very long ovipositor, indeed. Impressive. And curiously it has very resemblance with stratyomids larvae. Smile

It is the ovipositor - and only partly extended! Many flies have very long ovipositors which they can extend for egg-laying in deep crevices. Unless you find a female ovipositing, it's unusual to see the ovipositor fully out.

yes. I saw Ceratitis capitata ovipositing in Sunday on Ficus carica fruit. The ovipositor was growing, and growing.... impressive! I thought that ovipositor could reach the other side of Ficus. Grin
Even so, this ovipositor is really very long.
