Not sure about either names you're using but it is certainly a Mintho sp. Would be nice to be able to key it though because it doesn't look typical for M.rufiventris - did you take a specimen?

zcuc
No specimen and no good images either. but this is not the first time see those flies. I guess they are relative common in this area.

Zcuc is correct

Interesting species - would be nice to see it under the microscope for the differences. Smile

Theo: are we likely to get this species in Central Europe now or is it mainly Middle Eastern or Asian?

NO, its very southern, essential a north African / Middle east species, that is easily found (well, Chris, maybe not by you, given your Mintho-score) on the Canary Isles, for instance. Can be found in Sicily, Crete, and undoubtedly also on the main land of Europe, but southern.

The only specimen I have of Mintho rufiventris came from a window in the south of France ... I am destined to be a Mintho-expert in photos only Wink

I had submited this Tachinidae to the gallery as Mintho praceps, Fabricius, 1787 and now I can see it's name changed to Mintho praeceps, Scopoli, 1763
Which name is currect?

How is it possible to tell between M.praceps and M.praeceps?

ChrisR
I don't have a checklist of names that cover your part of the world but they seem just to be synonyms for the same fly. In general ICZN takes the oldest name for the same species so "praeceps Scopoli, 1763" takes precidence over "praceps Fabricius, 1787". Smile

Theo once told me to check names in BDWD site.
I found both sp. as valid names
http://www.sel.ba...253&-find=

http://www.sel.ba...254&-find=

So if they both the same sp. but has two valid names, I guess this site is not very up to date?

ChrisR
Well, assuming they do actually refer to the same thing then I'd say praeceps should be the valid name and praceps should be the synonym ... but lets wait for Theo Smile

I have never heard of praceps, other then in the link above. It must be a typo of that website. If possibile, please report it as such.
