unknown fly with bristly abdomen
Stuart Ball
Found this fly in August, in a wood on River Kent estuary, Arnside, Cumbria. Possible tachinid but not sure.

Looks like it might be a Dexia - did you take a specimen Stuart or do you have any more photos taken from different angles? Smile

Looking at it again, looks like Dexiosoma caninum, but with fainter markings on the abdomen.
Chris, I did not take a specimen but I do have another image and location details I can send you privately.

Zeegers
NO, not Dexiosoma, the wing venation does not match.
So it really is Dexiini, and then 2 options come in mind:
Dexia rustica
Dinera grisescens.

Any indication of its size ?

The excavation reaches the margin of T1+2 so that should rule out Dinera ... or it does in Belshaw's key Smile

Thanks for the info.
As I took this picture on 4th August 2006, I do not remember the exact size, but not more than 8mm.
Location was Dobshall Wood, Cumbria grid SD451780.
