Hello, This is my first query to Diptera.info. I took this picture on 13th of May 2019 i Leudelange (Luxembourg). It was sitting on top of a blue paper recycling bin. Can anyone tell me which kind it is? I hope I have done everything correctly. If not I will be grateful if anyone can tell me how to do better. Hi, It is a male member of family Bibionidae. Unfortunately, the picture is rather blurred and does not show the details that are needed for identification. Even the genus is not clear. I guess it is a Dilophus, not a Bibio. In Dilophus, the fore tibiae have a ring of short apical spurs, while in Bibio the fore tibiae bear a strong apical spur and a smaller one. But I cannot see and say more, sorry. Regards, Sundew |

I agree it is pretty blurred, but it looks too hairy to me for Dilophus. Thorax of male Dilophus lack long hairs, at least in central Europe. Theo |

Hello Sundew, Thanks for the information. I know and understand, that it is often difficult to determine such small animals. It is also difficult to take appropriate pictures of these small flyers. They are not always patient enough, to allow you taking good pictures of them, but that's the game. Regards, Roger |
