I took this picture today in my garden in Putte, The Netherlands. Is it a Psychodidae sp. and is it possible to further identify it? Thank you for help, Niek |

Jorge, Thanks again. You must have noticed by now that I am a beginning amateur.......... I like to make photographs of as many animals as posiible (for me) in my garden and don't want to write nonsense below them in my album. I started liking the subject and someone guided me to this site for which I am very grateful. So now I am (mis?)using you experts..... Misusing since I am not qualified to make any contributions, just benefit. Best regards, Niek |

Diptera has never wings like Trichoptera in roof appearance over the abdomen. The wings are very "hairy", there are some Trichoptera with scales (and Collembola - the first to have them; and Lepidoptera have it as well. Some diptera, like some culicids could have some scales.); they have TWO pairs of membranous wings -- DIPTERA HAS NEVER it! (only one pair and one pair of halters). In Trichoptera, tibial spurs on the legs are fully conspicuous. (see the middle legs). The antennae are very long and filliform (there are some flies with big antennae but never with that appearance - eg. Keroplatidae). almost all larvae of Trichoptera (caddis flies - wrong name...) are aquatic. |

Dear Jorge, Thank you for your extended reply and help. I bought some "insect guide books" but find it extremely difficult to identify any insect with them. Your help therefore is highly appreciated, but, having noticed your many answers to various questions and the enormous amount of time you must consequently dedicate to this site, I do feel uncomfortable using part of that with my amateuristic questions. On the other hand, where else can I get such detailed and correct information? So, as long as you don't mind.......... Best regards, Niek |

For Diptera - HERE. There is no other place in net better than this. And you will see it yourself. See "Dipterist's handbook" for general information, and with some larvae's keys; see the Paul Beuk's book - (CHECKLIST OF THE DIPTERA OF THE NETHERLANDS - here >>> http://home.hccne...paul.beuk/ -- hey, I don't receive any commission.  Paul, schiuuu...  lol ). You are welcome with your amateur questions. Anyone question! Just concerning diptera, of course. Some more info about other orders: (you need to tell which are you more interested) For hymenoptera parasitica - it will appear very soon an international forum. For Coleoptera - there are sites like meloidae.org or a russian site - http://www.zin.ru.../index.htm - For Formicidae - one of the best is Lamarabunta (Spanish site with a forum) General insect guide books are not trust, usually. I don't spend that long time here. I leave always my connection online, and very rarely I do a logout. |
