Hello, May 09, 2020 in the south of France. Between 4.5 and 5 mm in total length, to the tip of the wings. I think Hilara for the shape of the antennae and for the thin blackened spot on the outer edge of the wing. If it is Hilara, can we go to the species? Thank you for your help. Empis. Hilara has a short proboscis; the length in Empis and Rhamphomyia is variable. |

Thank you very much, John, Yes, I hadn't paid attention to the proboscis. So there are Empis that have antennas like these and a thin blackened spot stretched out on the wing? |

Is it possible to determine the species from the antennae and spotted wings? Or should we stay on Empis sp.? |

The pterostigma is present in many species and hardly diagnostic, sorry. Identifying southern French females of Empis s.str. from will always be a challenge (and one we will most often loose).
