Ephydridae: Diclasiopa lacteipennis? => yes
Steve Scholnick
Update: ID kindly confirmed by Dr. Wayne Mathis, Smithsonian Dept. of Entomology

This one appears to key out to Diclasiopa lacteipennis using the Manual of the Nearctic Diptera ephydrid key and it appears to fit the description of that species by Mathis and Mathis*. I think Discocerina as currently defined is ruled out by the 2 notopleural bristles being equidistant from the notopleural suture and by the anterior notopleural bristle being only ~1.3 farther from the postpronotal bristle as it is from posterior notopleural bristle.

The fly was near a semi-urban part of Maryland with small and wet forested areas and ponds. The body length is 1.7mm which seems to be somewhat on that small side for D. lacteipennis

I have no prior experience with this genus and am hoping for some expert help with the ID. Thanks in advance

Regards
Steve
