Hello,

a female Antipalus. A detail of the front leg (first image) would probably tell me more about the exact species.

Another image. Is this sufficiently detailed?

An even closer view. Please write a short note, how you determine the species if there are some good field characters.

Hello,

this is Antipalus varipes, the most frequent Antipalus - species in Europe. In his checklist of the Hungarian Asilidae Majer also mentions Antipalus similis as probably occuring in Hungary but not recorded from this state.

I don't know A. similis by own practice, but using the key and the desriptions by Moucha and Hradsk? 1966 it is clear that your images show A. varipes. Some of the characters are: length of the metatarsus, the occurence or lacking of bristles on the front femur, the colour of the tibiae and tarsi, but I think it would be wise to check these characters under a stereomicroskop. What if you are recording A. similis for Hungary for the first time without having a voucher specimen?

Greetings, Danny Wolff
