Odinia trinotata
conopid
I collected this Odinia from a flight interception trap in a dead oak tree (15 April - 5 May 2020). It keys to O. trinotata but has distictly orange palps. All the descriptions/keys I have checked say that the palps are darkened, so I am wondering if this is not O. trinotata, or is it a trinotata without darkened palps?

It seems to fit best to O ornata Zett. Anyway, the European species need revision.

Thanks Jan,
O. ornata and trinotata seem to be very similar. I don't have and cannot find a description for ornata, so I have just the features given by Shtakel'berg who says ornata should also have palps darkened. So I can't be sure what this is. Probably ornata? But might be trinotata? As you say the European Odiniidae are a bit of a mess and need a review.

I've just found Collin's detailed description of trinotata (as maculata) and compared this with the gallery images of O. ornata. I am now fairly convinced that this is trinotata. It has much darker legs than oranata, also the dark mark on the post pedicel extends to the base of the segment, unlike ornata which has the dark marking confined to the anterior part of the post pedicel.

If the above seems good enough to be certain, I can upload the images to the gallery. Paul?

According to Krivosheina (1979 paper in Russian), O. ?ornata has pale palpi... I overlooked the coloration of postpedicel (4th picture), which is indeed characteristic for O. trinotata, so that it may be this species.
