 Isoneuromyia? No Orfelia fasciata!

Hi, Collected dry in my house (Lausanne, Switzerland). I get to Isoneuromya pseudochracea but according to Michal MANTIČ & Jan ŠEVČÍK, costa should go beyond the tip of R5 and stem of M should be longer than frm which is apparently not the case here. Do the setae continue past the forks of M and Cu? The key by Søli et al. asks about setae on the branches of these veins, not the stems. |

Thank you John for clarifying this point in the key. No indeed, the setae do not continue past the M and Cu forks (see image below). This now leads me to Orfelia (the tibiae show these 6 rows of black aligned setae; see images 1 and 5 above). Is there a key available for this genus?

Posterior margin of prothoracic spiracle apparently without a row of erect black hairs, so certainly no Isoneuromyia.

Thanks Paul. This points again to Orfelia, doesn't it? These are the Orfelia species listed in Fauna Europaea (in green those listed for Switzerland): Orfelia bezzii (Strobl, 1910) Orfelia bicolor (Macquart, 1826) Orfelia discoloria (Meigen, 1818) Orfelia excelsa Chandler, 1994 Orfelia falcata Zaitzev, 1994 Orfelia fasciata (Meigen, 1804) Orfelia gruevi Bechev, 2002 Orfelia minima (Giglio-Tos, 1890) Orfelia nemoralis (Meigen, 1818) Orfelia nigricornis (Fabricius, 1805) Orfelia pallida (Stæger, 1840) Orfelia persimilis Caspers, 1991 Orfelia tristis (Lundstrom, 1911) Orfelia unicolor (Stæger, 1840) nemoralis, nigricornis, and tristis are largely black on the head, thorax, and abdomen and can therefore be discarded, as can discoloria that does not have a preapical band on the wing (or at most a pale one). I am preparing the genitalia and will post the image soon. |

In our area it probably would be fasciata but I have no (visual/key) reference for all species.

The genitalia would confirm your hypothesis  Indeed, the genitalia of fasciata present in the gonostyli (=dististyle), a sinuous upper style and a narrow bare lower style, and a tooth-like process on the inner side of the gonocoxite (=basistylus). The genitalia of unicolor and discoloria are clearly different. I have not found (yet) illustrations of bicolor, excelsa, and persimilis but I would be surprised if they have genitalia identical to fasciata. It is not Orfelia excelsa: check figure 41 from this publication. It is not Orfelia persimilis: check figure 2 from this publication. It is not Orfelia bicolor based on this public image from Br. J.
