Neossos broersei (de Meijere, 1946) ?
Pierre-Yves
Hello Everybody,

I come to request your help. I need to identify a tiny Heleomozydea fly (body lenght less than 2 mm) caught this summer in a trap for necrophagous insects in my garden in south of French Brittany.

May be it could be the unknown male of Neossos broersei (de Meijere, 1946) - Chiropteromyzidae

Thank you in advance for your help.

The group was revised recently - see Rohaček, J. 2018 European Chiropteromyzidae (Diptera): Taxonomic revision, nomenclature, classification and preimaginal stages. Annales Zoologici (Warszawa), 2018, 68(2): 281-316

Hi Pierre-Yves,

Yes this is Neossos broersei, very nice find! The easiest way to find this species is by getting the debris off the bottom of a Barn owl (Tyto alba) nest box. Last spring I was able to breed at least a hundred specimens in a month.

Currently I'm finishing a paper with three necrophagous species new for the fauna of France. If you would be interested in that, send me a pm.

Kind regards,
Ectemnius

Thank you very much to each of you for your help.

I found Rohaček, J. 2018 reference on ResearchGate web site last nigth after sending this post. I noticed that my pictures are not the best to confirm identification.

I am very interesting by your paper Ectemnius ! I am writing too about flies of Acartophthalmidae family found in same area in 2019 and 2020 and known to be sapro-necrophagous species, specially A. bicolor. I send to you my E-mail adress Wink

Thank you again,

P-Y Smile
