Bibio clavipes?
Katrin Lena Schneider
Hi,
I found this March Fly in the Harz mountains on 9.10.2020. Could it be Bibio clavipes?

Katrin Lena Schneider
nearby I found another exemplar, looking quite similar, at least for me

aany chance of getting a better (sharper) view of the front leg ? Are we sure this is not Dilophus ?

Katrin Lena Schneider
Sorry, but I have no better image of the front leg.

John Carr
I can see blurry spurs in the second picture, and the r-m crossvein is shorter than usual in Dilophus. It should be one of the late season Bibio.

If my eyes don't deceive me, the pterostigma doesn't reach coast cell and the hind metatarsus is less than three times as long as it's width (+ wings are whitish?) = male B. clavipes. (Suomen karvasääsket ja maasääsket (Diptera, Bibionidae ja Pleciidae), Antti Haarto, 2012).

Greetings, Eric

Yes, but check my review in Nederlandse Faunistische Mededelingen. Most traditional features, as summarized by Haarto, are proven unreliable.

Hi Theo, I always start with your key from the Vliegenmepper 1997 and I try to purchase NFM vol. 48 from the EIS for longipes. The traditional features are only unreliable for longipes/clavipes or generally for the Bibionidae? If so, what should I use instead? I have several fotos of couples which I'm trying to identify.

Greetings, Eric
