Hi Jim,

The 'hunger fly' is a Calliphoridae, may times the size of this one. It looks like Megaselia scalaris, this one. Paul will know better.

Thanks for your help -- after being pointed in the direction of Phoridae, I had listed it as possible Megaselia scalaris; thanks for confirming this.

I often collect flies from the side of my house & I believe that was the case for this one since I didn't record a tree or flower. I often put specimen into my garage that is cool & dark so that they can calm down before I take a photo the next morning. This one died before I could get a photo.

Human environment makes Megaselia scalaris more likely. No 100% certainty, though, because the image is not entirely clear.
