Tabanus atratus, the common big horsefly in the southeast of the USA.
I wasn't aware this species had banded eyes .. but then again, I never saw it alive .

Thanks for your help. Yes, many large biting flies in the southeast USA are called horseflies. I looked at my original photo closely & concluded that the eyes are probably not banded but appear this way because of how the sunlight is shining through the trees.

No, the eye is banded and this feature does show on other pictures as well. I simply wasn’t aware of this ! I. the Palaearctic region. large Tabanus are always unbanded.

Tried to attach an image to a forum post. jpg, 32kB, 72dpi, no blanks, ... File name is correctly displayed, but when I click "Preview Thread" it just vanishes. Help!
