[edit] Orange Piophilidae with a bent leg => Neottiophilum praeustum
BjZelvelder
Hi, here's a strange looking Lauxaniidae fly that I have found in Sarthe (72), France. The habitus looks like Homoneura sp., it has the same black spots on the wings as Minettia inusta, but almost no bristle on the mesothorax (only 2 dc) which makes these propositions unlikely. Its posterior tibiae are also strangely bent… Any idea ?

Check Neottiophilum praeustum (Piophilidae).
Best wishes, Niels-Jan Dek

Thank you for your answer, your proposition fits perfectly with my specimen. However, its bent posterior tibiae don't seem do be described anywhere (but I might be wrong). Could it be an anomaly ?

Neottiophilum praeustum is nest parasit of birds, rare fly, we have only few specimens in the collection of Zool Museum of Moscow.
Hind tibia normally only slightly curved.

Thanks a lot for these specifications. I'm glad I took the time to shoot some photos of this fly that didn't look peculiar at first.

Best regards,

Benjamin Zelvelder
