According to wikipedia, the largest tipulids can get 64 mm long. I haven't found any primary source for this, but 64 is higher than 60.

"The flies range from 9–60 mm in body length and the Neotropical species Gauromydas heros (Perty, 1833; Mydidae: Mydinae) is believed to be the largest known Diptera."

Gauromydas heros is supposed to be the largest dipteran so far. Check tinyurl.com/85jvjze and here --> mydidae.tdvia.de.

I seem to recall reading that tropical species of Mydidae are the largest of all flies... so probably not that.

Perhaps open the image in a file editor, 'save as' under the same name and try again. Often helps to cure resource fork problems in the image.

Changing file name got the 2nd image to load but the first image is still refusing, second file name is the same but with an 'a' at the end.

No you are correct there, not a conicula, there is no 'u' in it. But at least you are at the correct end of the fly.

It is most likely not a corniculum you spy at, which is a shame because cornicula can be very interesting-looking structures. They are sensory organs on the vertex of Clytocerus, Panimerus, Jungiella,
