I observed this Chrysops the 11 of August in the marshes of Guines in the north of France. I hesitate between Chrysops viduatus and Chrysops caecutiens, is it possible to separate them with this single picture ?
Hello Maxime, we can exclude C. caecutiens as tibia II is yellow. But I think we cannot decide whether it's relictus or viduatus without seeing tergite 2.
Palpus is short, so it can't be viduatus. This feature is actually more reliable than the abdominal pattern in males .... wait for the Field guide ! (dutch version is being printed as we speak....)
