Saw this large fly on Red Flowering Gum Tree blossoms on the Gold Coast, Queensland Australia on Saturday the 5th of January 2008. I thought more likely one of the Syrphidae but would like a positive ID if anyone can help please.
For scale, the bud that the fly is sitting on is approximately 12mm across.

Hello, Trev!
Definitely a Syrphid. Resembles the genus
Helophilus here in Europe. But I don't know the Australian Syrphids, so you'll have to wait for the experts...

Looking at the flattened tibiae, the eyes meeting in a point (it's a male) and its protruded face, I would go for Mesembrius or some genus close to that.

Indeed Andre,
You're quite right, this really should be a male Mesembrius.
I'll take a look whether i can come up with a species name, but that'll have to wait until I get home.
Greetings,

Thanks for the input guys. Anyone that can give a positive ID would be really appreciated. I've found a few almosts amongst the gallery but no exact matches.
