Thread subject: Diptera.info :: Cricotopus sp. (cf tremulus) << Cricotopus pulchripes?

Hi everyone,

I found this one in Brittany. Based on the 'Handbook for the identification of British insects' dedicated to Chironomids, I would say that Cricotopus pulchripes does not seem like a bad option but I am really not sure...

Cricotopus pulchripes has tarsomere 2 of the fore legs contrasting white. There are at least three members of the tremulus group with dark fore tarsi and tergites 1 and 2 yellow.

From Hirvenoja (1973):

Fore tarsomere 2 contrasting white: pulchripes
Fore tarsomere 2 and base of 3 contrasting white: septentrionalis, tremulus, claripes
Fore tarsomere 2 dark: tergites 1 and 2 yellow: tristis, curtus, annulator
Fore tarsomere 2 dark, tergites 1 and 4 yellow: beckeri, triannulatus
