So, I found 1 male 2 females of Empis in my Malaisetrap in the center of the Netherlands over the first decade of May this year I did not recognize.....
In many keys, it more or less runs down to E. lepidopus, but there is not clear match in females and I have not seen an illustration the male genitalia of lepidopus.

These genitalia are very conspicuus, I'd say, to anyone with decent knowledge in the genus Empis.

Empis lepidopus is very rare in the Netherlands and therefore pretty unlikely.

In "Chvala, M., 1994. The Empidoidea (Diptera) of Fennoscandia and Denmark. III Genus Empis" the genitalia look more like the picture of Empis acinerea (Fig 142, page 90).

Thanks Jan Willem ! I was totally unfamiliar with this species and I don’t have this book. It explains a lot and it is a total match with Dick’s picture.
