Thread subject: Diptera.info :: Bombyliidae - Systoechus ctenopterus?

Hello Forum,

last year in July I found these nice Bombyliidae in very dry area in northern Germany. It?s an old military training area. Until now, I only know Bombylius major.

In the gallery there were only the species called Systoechus ctenopterus similar to my individual.

Are there any more similar species or is it Systoechus ctenopterus?

This looks like Bombylius venosus to me.

As far as I can tell, it is a Systoechus, but not S. ctenopterus.

Kahis is correct, this is Systoechus, but not S. ctenopterus. The absence of black bristles along posterior margins of tergites rule out ctenopterus. On the balance of probability this is Systoechus longirostris Beck. based on the relatively widely separated eyes. However, there is at least one species recorded from Germany described after the keys i have, so a specimen will be needed to confirm this det.

I will call it, like you said, David (Systoechus ?longirostris)!
