Photographed May 18, near Chicago IL USA. This fly was hanging out on some type of fungus - mushrooms? Thanks for any help.

Hello Bruce,
This is a species of
Suillia
, family Heleomyzidae. They are found on many kinds of decaying organic matter, both of plants and animals. So you can find them near compost, rotting fungi, dung, carrion, etc.
