hello flyforum,
Between the many Empis tessellata I saw this one near the water of the Beatrixpark.

I am not familiair with this specie (yet).

What kind of Empis sp. is this?

A nice example of a male Empis opaca: reddish legs, dorsal part of abomen glossy black and the sides silvery grey.

Does anyone know what this knot on the back of the head is?

I think this is Empis tessellata, but I can not place the knot on the backhead?!

It is a female of E. tessellata indeed. It appears as if part of the mouthparts are bent upwards, so not actually on the back of the head but projecting from under the head. Just a suggestion.

sounds plausible for me.

Never thought that these mouthparts are so flexible!
It is also difficult to do a nice midday-nap with such a mouth.

The fly looks rather disheveld, shabby, so I am not quite certain it is something 'natural'. The fly may have been squashed or hit by something.
