Generally, a look at the antennae will do the trick.

Next, the number of wings: two in Diptera, four in Hymenoptera. I know that it can be difficult to oberserve how many wings Hymenoptera have, as the hind wings are smaller than the fore wings and the forewings usually lie over the hind wings.
