While I was photgraphing
Bombylius feeding I noticed in one photograph that the tip of its proboscis splits into a Y-shape when it withdraws its tongue from the flower - see also my blog at

where I have speculated that this might be a mechanism to prevent airlocks in the proboscis after feeding on nectar. Does anyone know whether this speculation might be well-founded?
