Thread subject: Diptera.info :: Our town park: flies on bones (1)
#1
July 12, 2006.
Size ca. 3mm. Quite numerous on bones (vertebrae and parts of pelvic girdle of a cow I believe), together with Necrobia violacea (Cleridae) and Silphidae larvae.
Piophilidae, Prochyliza or Stearibia?

I think smaller ones (2-2.5mm) and with somewhat different forelegs are the males of the same species.

Hi Dima,
I would say you are on the right track with Piophilidae. Without key I wouldn't dare to even guess the genus. As soon as the specimens are identified, would again be a nice addition to the gallery!

Piophilidae for sure. I think we will need to let a key or Andrey Ozerov loose on these.
And they might even be different species: one has a yellow anterior margin to the frons, the other has not and the colour of the hind legs is also different.

Many thanks Jan and Paul

There are two species of Piophilidae. Fotos 1 and 2 with Prochyliza varipes (Meigen), and fotos 3 and 4 with Protopiophila latipes (Meigen)
