Any ideas on this pupa- about 8mm long on the outside of a water filled dustbin.

this is a typical Limnophora spec. (Muscidae). Seems an atypical habitat, for I have caught Limnophora only in flowing waterbodies (fresh and brackish).

Thanks for the potential ID's. Re the habitat - it was only a couple of feet away from my koi pond water filtration systems which might count as flowing water.
Just for interest - I collected the pupa and took some shots with a 10X lens system

Very nice picture indeed !
According to Rozkosny & Gregor (2004) there supposed to be 17 species of Limnophora in Central-Europe ("Mitteleuropa"Wink, of which only 4 are described in the larval/pupal stage. They mention the anal plate as one of the diagnostic features. But I assume this reticulate pattern (absent in larvae) must be diagnostic too
