Thread subject: Diptera.info :: Antennae Dolichopodidae

This Dolichopodid with the strange antennae was caught by sweeping a small stream near to a well. Location: the town of Collioure, Pyrenees orientalis, Southern Frande. Date: 27 july 2006.
I know they have sometimes strange antennae, but I hadn't seen one like this before.

I can only say that among Diptera of European part of Russia, Sciapus with such arista hasn't mentioned.

I have seen Dolichopodidae like this before. I don't know exactly where it came from, but it may have been material from Portugal collected by Andre van Eck. I don't think we already had found a name for it

Ludovicius eucerus (Loew). It's beautiful! A southwestern species in Europe, known from Spain, France, Italy and Switzerland, but also from Asia Minor.
The thin part of the arista of
eucerus should be haired. This character isn't really visible in the photos, leaving the identification somewhat uncertain - there's always the possibility of a new species.

I think you can see sparse hairs in the detail shot - not that I would have seen them or known to look for them if you hadn't mentioned them

Yes, Susan's right - getting close up to the screen I can see the hairs, just where they should be. A really excellent fly!
I'm very tempted to book a last-minute package holiday in the Pyrenees - except judging from the state of Britain's airports this week, I don't think I'd get there!
