I'm not familiar with this species, could anyone help please. It is very common at this time in woodland and wasteland (England).

A female Cheilosia, albitarsis or ranunculi.
That is, if you have ranunculi in England, otherwise it's albitarsis for sure!

Many thanks Gerard. Unfortunately we do have both species so it will have to remain an either/or.
