Could somebody who knows please confirm that this is Asilus crabriformis (male), my determination is from "Insects of Britain and Western Europe", which may not be the recommended literature, and the gallery isn't much help. I put the thread in Diptera Adults because it is such a wonderful fly I thought everyone would want to see it.

Yes it was the hairiness that worried me too.
You will notice that Eric Fisher has determined it as Laphria dizonias - so you were correct.
