This fly was photographed alongside a stream in the mountains, West Virginia, USA, 29 July 2004.
Extra points for identifying the unfortunate meal!

Many thanks to Herschel Raney, who identified this fly as a member of the Laphris canis complex (in the eastern U.S. this complex includes L. canis and two other species that can't generally be told apart from photographs).

And the meal is Hybotidae (possibly
Hybos
).
