It's not a
Hybomitra (no ocellar tubercle). I thought at first this might be a female
Tabanus glaucopis, but it seems a bit small, so could be one of the other species in this group, like
T. fraseri.

Theo - My literature on Eastern European tabanids is limited (and out-of-date!). Did Chvala
et al get
obsolescens and
fraseri mixed up? Their descriptions and figures would suggest that this is
fraseri.

I'm confused.

Well, near Moscow eyes with 3 bands = Hybomitra, but not in Turkey !
The eyes are bare, not hairy, which is hardly ever so in Hybomitra.
So, Hybomitra has, as a rule, hairy eyes and 3 bands.
