At first I thought it a bumblebee... then I thought it a robber fly...
is it a bee fly? I don't think so. Hmmm... Paul?
Oh - 18mm from antennae to wingtips.

For a change: it is a syrphid: genus Mallota. Nine Nearctic species.

Wow, you're kidding me. This is without a doubt the biggest I've ever seen! (How do you know all this stuff?!) Oh, I assume this is a female?
