The mis-matched legs colors were what caught my eye about this fly. It was small, only 2.3 mm in length. Arista obviously plumose.
Open area near woodlands, piles of cut grass nearby. West Virginia USA, 15 August 2006.

You often find dark front and pale hindlegs in Sciomyzidae, but the arista on this fly is typical of Ephydridae, and this leg colouration is frequent in the Psilopini. I'll see if I have any literature which will help with this one.

Thanks, Tony. Yes, I thought the arista were interesting. They seem to be plumose on one side only, or is that just an artifact of the flash lighting up only one side well?
