Thread subject: Diptera.info :: Large Insect, Wasp? Very unusual

An awful photo, sorry, taken in 1985 on color negative film and I'm sure it was with a slow shutter speed.

My memory is that this insect was fairly large, but my memory is not fresh and I did not measure.

Is this a large wasp or some kind of bizarre fly that is fooling me into thinking it is a wasp? I can't see the eyes well...

Help with this one will be appreciated!

Ctenophora species (Tipulidae). See http://bugguide.n...027/bgpage. Yes, it is trying to fool you into thinking its a wasp - as do many other species of cranefly! Smile

Tanyptera , most likely atra, female.
Tanyptera is sometimes included in Ctenophora.
