HI


* locality - Silgueiros - Viseu - PORTUGAL
* date - 18.11.2006
* size - 6 mm (medium fly)
* habitat - open land
* substrate - granite with lichens (not so far grape fruits in decomposition)

I would say Muscidae fly. Not Sarcophagidae because the eyes are pale... (not strong red) stripes in torax... (not sure if Sarcophagidae have too), not have a metallic appearance (like in Calliphoridae)... still learning to distinguish correctly between these...
A very strange thing... the other eye - left - seems to begin emptying!!! is this usual?

I would say Musca domestica male... Frown

Please provide me guidance in ID. I see a a gentle bend in vein M that is curved - and not abruptly bent.. and almost touching M4+M5 vein..
Seems the costa (vein costa - C vein) is broken in fore wing... at middle.

Musca autumnalis . Note the abdomen colour.
Costal vein not broken. Look at the right wing-I think what you saw as a costal break (just distal to the subcosta?) is slight damage.

hmm. you have reason. But the reddish colour is not so clear like in other photos. Smile

Reddish colour not just at base as in domestica so the abdomen is reddish with medial (centre-line) black stripe. Also M.domestica is synanthropic. There are other species in the genus though.
