Thread subject: Diptera.info :: cynipidae wasp? perhaps Cynips sp. ??

Hi
I found this beautiful wasp today. Next photos are above 3:1 magnification.
It is about 3 mm. A shining abdomen and hump thorax. Venation is typical for Cynipidae wasp?
Let me know what do you think.

Certainly a cynipid wasp - perhaps an
Andricus spp.? Here in the UK the orange/brown-bodied ones are usually
Andricus but that's a very unscientific way to identify something so tricky!

we have lots of galls here of all kinds
I will catch some, and put them in a box to see which kind of cynipid wasps get out.
Knowing the type of gasp it is more easy to know.

Studying galls is very good fun - but be a little careful because not all that comes out is a cynipid ... and even if it is a cynipid it might NOT be the builder of the gall. There are species of cynipid that live as 'inquilines' (or 'squatters'
inside the gall of another cynipid. Also, in my experience you are *much* more likely to see chalcid parasitoids appearing from a gall ... the original causers of the gall are often quite scarce.

yes. I know that.
I will try to collect some gall wasps... of Quercus spp. I know that there are other arthropods that can make galls as well. But not like I see in leaves of Quercus spp. or the branches, built by wasps.
