Dear all,

on Magnolia imported from Japan to Germany, unknown objects were found. First idea was a pupa, maybe Lepidoptera, but a cut revealed that it looks more like an egg mass.
Any idea?

Thanks in advance
Thomas

It's a praying mantis egg case.

Hi, this is an empty egg-case of a Mantidae, a preying mantis.

Best regards,

Henrik

Hello,

after some weeks in an incubator, about 50 small preying mantis hatched. Most of them were given to a pet shop, but we held 7, of which 5 are still alive and thriving. Is it possible to identify the species? Origin is Japan, close to Fukushima.

Thanks
Thomas
