I have this fly and I just don't know what it is. I catch it last year in octomber. Romania, near Timisoara in Satchinez Reserv (wet area).

you have here some photo and maybe somebody of you can help me.

Why not Helophilus perhaps H. pendulus. The yellow shape on the abdomen aren't very visible ?

Hello,

Reading Mark van Veen's description of M. peregrinus, I note that, in both sexes, the leg 3 is black. That the males have eyes meeting on the frons, and not separated like Helophilus.

The picture of the head is not quite evident, because it seems rotated, but this doesn't speak for Helophilus.

Helophilus pendulus I am very sure that it is not, the yellow that you see there is from the sternits.
about Mesembrius peregrinus I will check again, but as far as I know it has also some yellow on the tergits, and my fly doesn't have yellow.

I believe the yellow spots may lack for females, although there are usualy yellow spots on T2.
Another feature for this species is the grey band of dust on middle of T3, that is clearly visible on your shots.
This is a typical South-East european species (and genus) that occurs in Romania.
I'm sure G. Pennards or J. Smit could tell more about it.

Hai Amalia,
Well, very interesting creature you show us!
If you'll follow the keys (like van Veen), you'll end up with the genus Mesembrius, just like Stephane says.
I only know Mesembrius peregrinus, but that species has more yellow on the abdomen. If you go to the South, there are a lot more species in this genus, so it could be another species of Mesembrius!
I will try to do some more research, and if I come up with something better I'll tell you!
