Thread subject: Diptera.info :: Black insect with wings. Not a fly! - Sawfly? Maybe Abia sericea (Cimbicidae).

This was found in the Island of Rum (Scotland) last week (June 2013).

Other than being (quite) big and black, and not being a fly, I have no idea what it is. This is embarrassing.

Thanks for any suggestions!

Sawfly? Maybe Cimbicidae.

Great! A bit of googling had lead me to sawflies as well. Thanks!

-- after some more googling, I think ti may be Abia sericea, or something close.

Certainly Abia, but candens also occurs in W. Scotland, and they're not easy to tell apart as adults.
