Dear friends,

I collected last year on may 9th near Vai on Crete, much more to the east was impossible, 2 males Sarapogon or Saropogon ( I see that both names are used in pretty modern papers, so I would like to know which one in the correct one). I cannot determine which species with Theodor 1980 nor with Lindner.
Just look at the beard: it has both white and black hairs or bristles. Is there someone in the group, who can say what species it is?

We need more pictures from more angles with more light The beard is basicly white, the dark hair you from above are the hairs on the palpi. S. jugulum remains a candidate.

ah, now we come somewhere. I make this evening another photo of the beard. The beard contains several black hairs; they are certainly not from the palpi. But you will see later, Reinoud.

I hope the beard is now visible. Black and white hairs, I think (!) too many black hairs to say that the beard is basically white.

Could you also make pictures of Thorax, back of the head and legs? There are many species similar.

I wish i could tell you more. But Engel, E.O. 1930 brings me Saropogon cf eucerus. Description fits but not perfectly.

I checked also before in Theodor and Lindner, but indeed without any real result. As you see both specimens have a very similar beard with practically the same number of black and white hairs.

I noticed via Fauna Europaea that S. eucerus is recorded from mainland Greece, but not from Crete before. Well, if we assume the 2 specimens are actually S. eucerus, then it is hardly a surprise that it was collected on the island.
