Thread subject: Diptera.info :: An impressive and attractive Syrphid from Bulgaria

As indicated on a previous thread I made two tours to Bulgaria this year, principally as a Botanist, but inevitably one cannot ignore the rich diversity of spectacular and interesting insects. I photographed a number of flies on each of the tours and have already posted images from the first visit. This large and attractive Syrphid does not appear to be one that we have here in the UK. It was found near Vikren on 31 July 2013. I would be very grateful for any suggestions as to its identity. I do have the specimen if it would be of interest.

Many thanks

Alan.

It's a female of Epistrophe leiophthalma. Nice species.
I was there (Lilyanovo, Sandansky, Melnik) in this spring, very nice place for collecting, with many interesting flies(also undescribed).

Lukasz

Very many thanks Lukasz. It is indeed a very nice species and I am delighted to have an identification for it. We stayed at Melnick on my second tour.

Hello Alan,

These are very nice photo's of an awesome species! Would you upload them to the gallery? On the web only two foto's (of the same male) is all I can find of the species.
Interestingly the species is known from the south-east of Belgium from a single specimen.

Greetings,

Ectemnius
