Thread subject: Diptera.info :: Small, red legged Bibio

Hello!
This Bibionid from our house wall was only half as big as the
Bibio marci, which seemed to have freshly emerged from our garden :-):

Is it
B. pomonae? Or perhaps
lanigerus? Thanks!

HI Juergen,
difficult to tell, but definitely not pomonae. Which is a summer species, by the way. It seems to be the female of either lanigerus or an allied species (johannis, varipes)

B. johannis appeared here already two weeks or so ago (usually the first
Bibio), but I never saw one with such red legs (more yellow/lightbrown).

Well, males preceed the females (on the average, of course),
so beware of that !

Yes, the early ones here were all males. But what I meant was, that I never saw a
female B. johannis with such red colouration of the legs. Mostly they were more yellow like on this pic from May 2005:
