Chloropidae, Chloropinae: Meromyza ? femorata Macquart, 1835, female, (syn.: M. laeta Meigen, 1838; M. rufescens von Roser, 1840). An abundant species in Europe; hind femora peculiarly thickened. Females cannot be trustably identified. M. rufa Fedoseeva, 1960 is a very similar species and had already been discussed as being a possible further synonym. M. femorata larvae develop in "cocksfoot" [grass], Dactylis glomerata (Poaceae). The golden shine of the eye is produced by interference. If the water evaporates from dead specimens, the shine disappears as the interspace between certain layers of cells in the eye diminuates towards a rate outside the wave-length of the light.
